All I want for Christmas… is to tell the world about cloth diapers!

SONY DSC

Christmas is a fun season of the year, but I’m not a big “stuff” person. My idea of Christmas fun would actually be a large dumpster out in front of my house so I can “de-stuff”. I always get people asking about what I want for Christmas though, so this year, I’m taking the proverbial “bull by the horns” and just putting it out there for everyone to read. For Christmas, all I want is your help in raising awareness about cloth diapers.

Sometime between December 26th and January 9th, write a fresh blog post (or public post through some form of social media) about cloth diapers. The theme should be “Cloth Diapers are Easy and Inexpensive”. Include photos, charts, goals, etc. Your post must be at least five paragraphs long, well-written and original content not previously published. Your goal is to show the world how easy it is to cloth diaper a baby. Qualifying posts will also provide a link to Cotton Babies, mentioning us as your favorite source of cloth diapers. In your post, you must also mention that you haven’t received any form of compensation for the content, but that you are entering what you’ve written in a contest (include a link to this page).

Once it’s written and published, post a link to your post in the comments on this page. In your comment, please include the number of followers that your post has (could be followers or even Facebook friends if you wanted to post a Facebook note) that you have. This number won’t play a role in whether or not you win… I am just interested in aggregating the overall project exposure. One entry per family please. Remember, your content must be publicly readable!

Now, here’s the fun part. In keeping with our goal of helping people, the winning blogger gets to a choose a person who commented on their post to receive a gift of 12 bumGenius One-Size Cloth Diapers. The winning blogger will also receive a gift of 12 bumGenius One-Size Cloth Diapers for her own family.

When judging entries, I’ll be looking at whether or not you followed instructions, the number and quality of comments your post generated, why your commenters are interested in cloth diapering, and the overall quality of the content you created. I’ll choose a winner by midnight on January 15th.

A mom emailed me an example of exactly how well this works early today. Here is what she wrote:

Hi Jenn,

I just wanted to share this with you. I am the mother of three little boys. I am a HUGE fan of Bum Genius diapers.  Anyway, I am currently going to school to become a Child Life Therapist.  I recently wrote a paper about the use of cloth diapers. Doing research I found a Time magazine article where (I am paraphrasing you here) you said, “at $6-$18 a diaper, people don’t realize cloth diapering can be $300 for the entire time of diapering vs $3000 for disposables.”

I was SO proud of this paper, but I attend a university where most of my classmates are military personnel. They wrote their papers on lots of subjects, but nothing even remotely related to juvenile products. I never thought they would even read my paper when we submitted them for peer review on the online forum.

FIVE different students said they are now considering cloth because of my paper!!

Just wanted you to hear that. Its funny, I never thought I would be so excited about a baby product like cloth diapers….. But I am so glad they are so cool now! :)

Much Love,

Becki

Clearly, working together, we can raise awareness. Let’s get to it!

Thanks for a great contest! Excited to see who wins! :)

  4. Linda says:

ok, so your article resembles exactly what I’m starting (as of Jan 2012). And yes, I’m too late to win your prize, but fluff for thought. I too am military and when we PSCed from somewhere to the middle of no where, no one around had heard of modern cloth diapers and there was no where around to purchase them. I had mamas coming out of the wood work asking about my son’s cloth diapers. Many of our families have trouble putting food on the table much less diapering babies. So, and idea was born. I put together borrow baskets that a family can borrow for two weeks to figure out what type of diapering system they like. (Yes, Flips are on of the AI2 systems represented, and Econobum is the cover and prefold system.) This way they don’t have to try to peicemeal it and kill themselves on shipping, nor have they spent precious funds on a diaper that turns out not to work. Then they buy a stash of diapers (usually 24) that is tailored to thier wants and needs. Based on financial need, they have a payment plan (that usually includes a steep discount) to pay for the basket over 6 months. I’ve had several maufacturers sign on to help by allowing me to purchase from them at wholesale in order to allow those in financial need to be helped. Of course those not in financial need reap the benifit of having a CD educator and store local. I hope your christmas was merry and bright. I had two families a little brighter even before the program was fully up and running. :)

  11. Kadie Graham says:

I love my cloth diapers. I am currently using Kid #1′s diapers on Kid #2, which happen to be a mix of original bumGenuis up through the new 4.0s. Heck, I am probably actually more of a cloth diaper snob. I try not to look down my nose at ‘sposie users, but I personally think its irresponsible to not even TRY cloth, even just for at home use. I was thrilled when I was told my new daycare would use my cloth diapers; it actually was a huge reason why I chose the new daycare. Since I have saved so much money with Kid #2 and diapers, I am making a strong push to use cloth training pants. We’ll see…

  44. Chantal Saunders says:

Wow, that’s great! I wish I could somehow convince people how wonderful cloth is. I use the Flip diapers and used to use disposables when we went out. I have now tossed the disposables because: firstly my baby screams when she poos in a disposable, secondly, they leak! As soon as she poos it just runs out of the side of the leg (probably why she screams!), I have tried different types and same results. I love the Flip, have had hardly any messes :) Just wish they were easier to get hold of in South Africa.

I wrote my blog post about the contest! I couldn’t figure out how to get my blog site to allow the sites to actually link…I think my pop-up blocker is stopping me, but I tried to make the most of it for easy copy/paste access to this site and to cottonbabies.com

I have 4 followers on my blog…and I also posted on facebook about my blog post.where I have 230 “friends”.

    Thanks for a great contest!!

I was just looking at my post and it put the date as 12/25 even though I didn’t post it until yesterday evening 12/26. I started writing a draft on 12/25 which must be why it did that :(

I am new to blogging and only have 3 followers, but have shared on FB as well-186 friends.
I am expecting my first baby in May, and plan to cloth diaper from birth. I would love to win 12 bumGenius diapers to add to my stash!

Cloth Diapers are so much better for the environment! And so natural for baby! We used cloth diapers for our children and our daughter is getting ready to give us our first grandchild in the next few months. She is strongly considering cloth diapers, we are just not sure of the brand to choose. She has our support for cloth diapers!

  68. Cloth diapers are awesome and I’m so happy to help spread the good word. I tell anyone who will listen how much I love mine!

  69. I just put up my blog post. I may have had a bit too much fun as it ended up longer than I had expected, but I hope it is helpful to those looking for more information!

    http://www.theecofriendlyfamily.com/2011/12/clothdiapers-good-bad-honest.html

It went out to 1,376 feed subscribers, 2,108 FB fans (plus my personal friends) and 3,193 Twitter followers.

  70. Just posted a facebook note. Hope it meets all the requirements. I have 577 followers. https://www.facebook.com/notes/puliwooli/no-more-blowouts/201048206650672

    Thanks.

I have a bunch of lady friends that are expecting or recently had babies. It’ll be easier for them to try cloth diapering if they can get 12 for free!

  72. All of my “friends” on FB are dog people, hardly any have any two-legged children. I’m not sure who would see and utilize my words :( I also technically have a blog, but that is also about dog training, Where could I post said peice and actually convert some folks?

  73. 2plus1at21 says:

I can echo the previous commentor almost exactly…I would love to give 12 new diapers to my co-worker who is expecting and considering cloth. Very excited to join in on this!

  74. This is great! i’m a recent convert to cloth! can’t wait to make a post!

  75. Tara Sutton says:

I would love to be able to provide 12 new diapers for my friend who is having a baby any day now! She’s using Flips to start with too! I am excited for this contest!

  76. Bonnie says:

I’ve written a couple of post about cloth diapering already, but I will happily write another. :)

  77. Maria says:

I will have to start working on this now!

  78. What a wonderful way to encourage others to spread the word! I’ll have to get working on something, though I have no need for diapers, I love cloth and am always happy to get the message out.
